The coastal waters offshore of Brookings, Ore., are home to some of the best salmon, lingcod and rockfish opportunities outside of Alaska. Salmon topping 50 pounds are caught each October as they wait for fall rains to enter the Chetco River. Easy limits of black rockfish are common throughout the year. Trophy lingcod are caught in February through May.

Oregon Coast native Andy Martin, a Coast Guard licensed offshore captain, knows where and how to catch rockfish and lingcod year round offshore of Brookings and is an expert salmon troller when the kings and coho are in season.

When not taking customers on trips out of Brookings, Andy guides on the coastal
rivers of Oregon and Northern California, and during the summer, runs a charter boat in the Gulf of Alaska, pursing record-size lingcod, trophy halibut and salmon.

Andy is used to working hard to catch limits in Oregon. That same work ethic has allowed him to enjoy incredible success in Alaska, where many of the local charter skippers simply go to the same spots everyday, whether they are productive or not.

Off of Brookings, Andy’s customers enjoy light-tackle action for rockfish and lings. Andy’s favorite offshore season is the October ocean salmon season. A typical trip includes trolling for big kings at the mouth of the Chetco out to the buoys and getting a limit of rockfish before heading back in.
Brookings, Ore., has the safest bar - or river crossing into the ocean - on the entire Oregon Coast. This allows anglers to fish year-round, weather-permitting. Winter-time ocean fishing is much more limited out of other Oregon ports.

Andy partners with fellow pro guide and captain Randy Wells of Fish Oregon Alaska. They offer near-shore and offshore trips.

Crabbing trips in Coos Bay are also available and are popular during the holiday season.
"We had a great trip fishing with Andy. He worked hard to get us on the fish, first the halibut and then the salmon. It truly made our trip to Alaska the trip of a lifetime."

Meet our Alaska deckhands
Capt. Andy Martin worked with a couple of great deckhands in 2007 in Alaska. Greg Dillard, pictured holding a salmon caught by a happy client, is a native of Washington State and is a student at Western Washington University in Bellingham.

Greg is an avid ski boarder and enjoys salmon and steelhead fishing. Greg served as deckhand of the Capt. Hook, a 30-foot Almar Andy captained in Seward, in late July, August and September.
Travis Gass, pictured holding a halibut, worked as a deckhand May through July, before returning to his home state of Texas, where he is a student at Baylor University. Travis worked as a deckhand with Capt. Andy aboard the Raptor in Deep Creek, a popular halibut fishing area in Cooke Inlet, and aboard the Capt. Hook in Seward. Travis is a pilot in training and became an avid fly fishermen while in Alaska.
